After serving several years in prison after taking the fall for a botched bank robbery, Cain Anderson is released and has to acclimate to life in the outside world while still feeling the temptation to return to a life of crime.
During his early years, Cain was a troubled youth who shuffled between foster homes and juvenile detention facilities. Never having any true role models in his life he turned to those he saw on the streets for guidance which led him to his surrogate father figure and career criminal David Barnes. David mentored Cain in all of the ways of the criminal lifestyle, having him steal cars, rob houses, and sell drugs throughout his teenage years. As he got older the stakes of the crimes that Cain had to commit steadily rose until one day he was asked by David to be part of a crew that was going to rob a local bank. The heist goes array and Cain is arrested. While in jail he is told that he is facing up to twenty years for his role in the crime, however, he can greatly reduce the length of his sentence if he gives up the ring leader, David. Cain refuses to give David up and in retaliation, the district attorney gives him the full twenty-year sentence. Years later Cain is up for release. As he is being processed out of the prison, he is told that he will have to find steady work and check in once a week with his parole officer. Cain is unworried as he is not fully aware of how much the world has changed since he has been in prison. Things like Iphones and smart technology completely confuse him and he realizes that a job hunt is going to be incredibly difficult. After several weeks of struggling to find work, he is approached by David once again who is offering the opportunity to do more criminal work in order to get paid. Cain is initially hesitant, but eventually gives in when he realizes how much money is at stake. While working with David again he notices him mentoring young men on how to act in the streets and this upsets him as he begins to see how manipulative David is and how little he actually cares about the people he claims to care about. Cain’s parole officer Janet finding out that he is involved with David again confronts Cain and tells him that he is going back to jail. Cain makes her an offer that in order to avoid jail time he will wear a wire and inform David. Janet agrees and over the next few weeks, Cain begins relaying information about the operation to the police. When the police have enough evidence to arrest David they break into the compound and David and Cain have a final confrontation in the form of a shootout. Cain eventually wins and David is taken away. Cain sets out on a new life path knowing that it will be difficult but that he can persevere.
