It’s been 60 years since World War III nearly wiped us off the face of the earth in a hail of nuclear explosions, and human beings still have not learned their lesson. The survivors and the offspring of the survivors, bitter, defeated, have either given up on any form of a meaningful existence, drowning their ennui in homemade corn whiskey, or placing false hope in puerile witchcraft and sorcery, anything to give them a reason to wake up in the morning.
Then there are those who try to call themselves “government officials”. They have taken it upon themselves to try to sift through the rubble to put humanity back together, piece by piece. Most of their so-called “citizens” mock their efforts to rebuild, euphemistically referred to as “the Renaissance”.

A group of elders who once worked for the government and led us into the mess of the apocalypse still cling to their sense of entitlement and authority.

They have elected Hayley Rogers, a bright, gorgeous young woman known for being a child musical savant, as “president”, a title given to her out of the belief that her intelligence, charisma and beauty may inspire the citizens to reconsider giving up on themselves. Hayley takes her title deadly seriously, resentful of those who simply think of her as a just a pretty face and eager to remind everyone of the intelligent side of her character’s descriptive spectrum.
Into this broken, post-apocalyptic world, thousands of extraterrestrial beings fall from the sky. Their highly developed brains enable them to quickly adapt to their surroundings and they are able to absorb human languages simply by being exposed to them for a few hours or days. They claim to have watched the destruction of human existence from a distant planet and have come here to observe the damage. Their method of exploration is to imitate their surroundings and the behavior of the beings they encounter.

Although humans are reluctant to make contact with these strange creatures, Hayley encourages her citizens to accept their presence and assist them in their exploration. Unfortunately, most people choose to approach these visitors with the prejudice and intolerance that humans are unfortunately known for--which the aliens mirror!

With each encounter of bigotry and intolerance, the tension tightens as the aliens’ behavior matches the humans. Able to see the whole picture and that a system of destruction is slowly being developed right in front of her eyes, Hayley tries to convince her citizens that they are the ones creating the problems with these beings, that their behavior is leading down a path of increasing conflict. And the questions loom: what is the actual motive behind this alien exploration of our planet? What kind of self-defense are they capable of? Are they really just silent observers or are they invaders who have come to colonize what’s left of our planet? The answers to these questions will lead to a devastating battle with the aliens that may finally push humanity to the very brink of extinction--or are we actually just fighting with a mirror image of ourselves?
