Draft 1
“The First Son” is all about, the First Son. He has two best friends who he drinks with almost every night. They find themselves doing normal things, but now on a higher scale. They now have the resources to do whatever they want. Think “Workaholics”, the main characters had enough money to get drunk and party a lot sure. But imagine those type of characters with unlimited resources and one of them living in the White House. This is what “The First Son” is about. Inserting three special characters into situations such as: speed dating, going to sporting events, camping, doing volunteer work, pranking the President by “kidnapping” themselves. Of course this show isn’t just going to repeat itself over and over again with its drunk theme.
The show’s B plot will be sprinkled in enough to keep the viewers engaged. The very first episode; the Chinese President’s daughter is lost within the White House. Who took her? The SOS blames the three boys and the boys blame the SOS. But the boys were drunk at the time. Who does the United States President believe? More importantly, what does the Chinese President believe happened?
The boys can create funny moments without being drunk. Just the thought of having a Tinder girl over at the White House always makes me laugh. Having them do anything and just inserting the fact that it’s at the White House, the most prolific spot in America, adds a certain funny element.
“The First Son” has quick jokes within conversations and has situational jokes. Like when the boys have their rapid gun firing video game on way too loud and a tour of fifth graders come through the White House; SWAT comes and it’s all over the news.
“The First Son” is finding out who your real friends are, who is loyal to you and who just wants to be with you just because you’re the President’s son. Among loyalty, there are many other themes, the biggest ones are; veracity, family, and sticking to one’s true self no matter what.
“The First Son” will have a light tone. It’s a comedy first. There will be situations that become serious, but the camera will always be focused on the next joke. The best way to mashup this show would be to say; it has the background of “Veep” with the comedy and style of “Workaholics” combined with the tone and ambiguity of “Parks and Recreation”. But unlike “It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia” because our characters choices will always have consequences to them.
I also like to compare it to any Danny McBride show (“Eastbound”, “Vice Principals”, “Gemstones”) how they’re serious when they need to be, but always funny. I can lightly link it to “Insecure”, I like how that show flows slowly on the main idea, but is hilarious and always lets you know what happening and gives you a sense of time. The episodes from one to another are never too far apart, and even from season to season is pretty close, that’s how I envision “The First Son” to be. “Insecure” also creates its own world within itself with the help of social media, TV and music. That is something “The First Son” should also take from.
Mostly set within D.C., I envision everything to be bright. Every light in the city needs to look like it’s about to explode. The White House should look big and amazing. These characters bring a lot of energy to every room and their liveliness should be seen with ease. The camera movement should be steady and smooth, but go with the characters as they move and act. Whenever there is a scene change, we should be quick cutting to the city skyline or some footage of people in D.C. with some music to keep the flow of the show moving and keep the overall tone as light. We can also stay on the boys in certain situations and have them just be drinking or doing something stupid while the music plays over them. The idea is to never truly break away from the show and keep the flow moving, a la “Bad Education” (UK series).
“The First Son” is geared for premium networks and streaming services. The series is filled with vulgar language and dirty jokes. There should be a good amount of insult comedy, no one is safe. There shouldn’t be too much violence, but the speech play and some sexual scenes should easily make this show be rated MA. Sexual scenes should NOT be over the top, and there shouldn’t be many at all. After writing three episodes, I have yet to put in a sexual scene or even had the idea to. It’s just not in the show’s DNA.
The show’s outline for episode to episode is easy. You always continue on what happened last. You will always have a main idea for what the boys are doing. You can lightly trickle in the main plot into the story. You will be able to create new characters that challenge the boys for that one episode.
In writing and rewriting, and rewriting some more; I laugh at the same parts multiple times on paper. I can only imagine what it’s going to be like on an actual screen. “The First Son” will be a big hit across all boards of people. Its target audience is not just young adults, but people who love to see powerful people be funny like in “Veep” but also like to see drunks make fools of themselves like in “Workaholics” and “Trailer Park Boys”.
