During a riot at a maximum security prison, inmate Gary Hawthorne sustains a brain injury at the hands of a ruthless corrections officer and is diagnosed with retrograde amnesia. Unable to recall anything about his past, including his crimes, he begins therapy with a psychologist to help him remember.

The story alternates between past (pieces of Gary's trial, his life as the owner of a woodworking studio in a small Minnesota town, and a detective investigating him for reasons unexplained) and present (therapy sessions, prison life, and conflict with the brutal corrections officer). As the therapy progresses and his memory gradually returns, Gary begins to wonder if he was wrongly convicted.
