After the sudden death of his estranged father, a young man is thrust into a new world he doesn’t fully understand while struggling with his identity and his relationship with his father.
Our protagonist Steven is a kind and hardworking young man who has had to grow up in destitute poverty due to his mother, Claudia’s, declining mental and physical state which has prevented her from holding down a steady job throughout her life, leaving her incredibly bitter and frustrated at the world. Throughout his childhood Steven has been told repeatedly by his mother what a cruel and selfish person his father was and how his absence has contributed to their current financial state, causing Steven to have deep resentment toward the father he has never met. Currently, Steven is taking night classes at a local community college focusing on business with the hope of one day opening his own financial consulting company that he hopes can improve the livelihood of individuals in his community. One day while at a bar, he overhears the news that billionaire Derek Ellison has suddenly passed away. Steven vaguely recalls the name because Derek was from the same city as Steven and there were a few public areas named after him. Steven doesn’t think anything of this though and leaves. It’s also revealed in this new story that Derek passed before naming a successor for his company. We can hear the bartender's remark on their time growing up with Derek and how he seemed to have changed for the worse after becoming rich. Later that day Steven receives an email from who he thinks is his professor asking him to meet up to discuss a project. When he arrives he finds a man he hasn’t met before and the man informs him that he was the personal assistant of Derek Ellison and he was instructed to give Steven a package upon his death. Upon opening the package Steven is shocked to find pictures of his mother hugging and kissing a man he recognizes as Derek Ellison and he begins to understand some of the mystery surrounding his life. Somewhat in denial, he retorts that the pictures could mean anything. While the assistant Terry simply responds “I think you and I know exactly what it means.” He rushes home and angrily confronts his mother who reveals the truth about her relationship with Derek Ellison and his absence in Steven’s life. He learns that his father stepped out on his mother because he wanted Steven to group up hard in order to have a clearer perspective on life and learn the value of hard work and gain skills like empathy that he believes his overly privileged children lack.
