Ex-barmaid, Jessica Crowley marries Chet Crowley, Nevada rancher and widower, for a better life. But it all goes south when Chet breaks his leg and comes home from the hospital. While he's been gone Jessica's been having an affair with a ranch hand hired to help with chores. When Chet finds out, he tries to kill them both. But the attempt fails, and the ranch hand kills him. Later in the story, the ranch hand tries to rob her, but Jessica kills him. The plot also involves two midnight burials, Jessic's confrontation with Reno gangsters, the ranch hand's shady dealings in town, Jessica's midnight face-off with cattle rustlers, and finally, the moment when she sits down at the piano and begins her long-delayed passion anew.
